The addition of more natural light into any room can provide a number of benefits. One is that exposure to natural light has an effect on mood. Many of us will have heard of SAD syndrome, its full name is Seasonal Affective Disorder and it is sometimes referred to as winter depression. Common symptoms include feelings of depression, lethargy, irritability and a general lack of energy. Whilst there is still more to learn about the disease it is thought to be caused by a lack of sunlight affecting the hypothalamus part of the brain functioning properly which in turn affects melatonin and serotonin production and also your body clock (your circadian rhythm) which leads to some of the symptoms described. So clearly adding additional natural light is a major help here and of course more natural light leads to a lower requirement of artificial light – so keeping your electricity bills down too. When it comes to adding additional light to a room there are a few of options. Clearly adding an additional window to a wall is one but when looking at flat roofs or attic rooms that’s where your local skylight installers at Roofers Kilmarnock can assist you in your quest for light.

So, what’s a sun tunnel (sometimes called a sun tub or tubular skylight) and how does this differ from a skylight? One of the main differences is that the one focus of a sun tunnel is to bring natural light into an area. Unlike a skylight which like a traditional window can be opened and therefore provide another ventilation route, whereas a sun tunnel is a closed system. The other big difference is that a sun tunnel, as the name suggests, can capture the light from one end of the tunnel (the outside) and reflect this to another part of the house in a slightly different position. The tunnel which runs between both ends is highly polished and therefore acts as a mirror so the light captured at one end can be diverted to the other end without a degradation of light intensity. The fixing on the roof will look like a clear plastic dome which will capture the external light. At the other end, typically in a ceiling, you will see what looks a little like a round porthole. The light diffuser at this end means that light is spread and you will be surprised at the difference which may seem light a relatively small porthole can ‘light up’. Sun tunnels are much cheaper to install than a skylight and are growing in popularity in new build homes, where many upstairs landing will feature a sun tunnel.

When most people talk about a window in a roof they often call it a Velux window. In fact Velux is simply the name of the main brand of skylight window. In much the same way as Hoover was referred to vacuum cleaners, Velux is interchanged with skylights - so it is important to remember that other manufacturers are around and can provide excellent skylights. So if you are thinking of installing one or a couple of these in a loft roof or flat roof, please call our team to discuss what options are available.
These additional windows should be seen as an investment into your property and if you look to sell your home in the future, these will definitely be seen as a plus point from potential buyers.

Natural light is essential for our health and wellbeing, and a roof light is an excellent way to bring it into your home. Not only does it brighten up the living area, but it also has a number of benefits that can help improve your quality of life. The most obvious benefit of natural daylight is its important role in keeping us mentally and physically healthy. Exposure to natural light helps regulate our circadian rhythm, which is responsible for controlling our sleep-wake cycle. It also helps boost our moods and energy levels, as well as providing us with Vitamin D from the sun’s rays. Additionally, natural light can reduce eye strain and headaches caused by artificial lighting.
Roof lights can also help to improve ventilation in your home by allowing fresh air to circulate more freely throughout the space. This can be especially beneficial during hot summer months when you want to keep your home cool without having to rely on air conditioning or fans. Furthermore, roof lights can even lower your energy bills by reducing your dependency on artificial lighting during the day. At Roofers Kilmarnock we can advise on a wide choice of roof lights, skylights and sun tunnels for both flat and pitched roofs, so you can find the perfect solution for your home.
The most obvious benefit is the sense of additional space that comes with daylight. Natural light has been proven to make people feel more relaxed and energised, while artificial lighting can often make a room feel cramped and uncomfortable. Sun tunnels also help reduce energy bills by providing an alternative source of light during the day, meaning you don’t have to rely on electric lighting as much. These tubular tunnels are easy to install into all types of roofs, making them an ideal solution for two storey houses that often lack natural light on landings and bathrooms. Bungalows with dark hallways also benefit greatly from the installation of a Velux sun tunnel. Sun tunnels are energy efficient and require minimal maintenance, making them a cost-effective option for homeowners looking to improve their home’s lighting.
We have many years of roofing experience and have installed and repaired many skylights and sun tunnels from many different manufacturers.
Yes we clean skylights as part of our roof cleaning service.
Yes. We profive a full repair or replacement service for Velux windows, skylight and sun tunnels and will do the same for other manufacturers too.
We have no particular affinity or bias for one brand over another. Clearly Velux are a very well know brand, in fact most people will refer to a Velux window as a window in a roof rather than using the generic term of skylight. Some of the other well know brand which we install and repair include Sunlux, Optilight, Fakro and RoofLITE+ who are an up and coming manufacturer who will provide good quality skylight much cheaper than Velux.
Absolutely - it's a great way to bring in natural light into garages or small extensions.
